Beyond X-ray and ultrasound

Other Diagnostic Imaging

Where to start for bone density, vascular and heart ultrasound, nuclear medicine, MRI, CT and hospital imaging.

Use the exact test on your requisition

Not every imaging clinic performs every examination. MRI, CT, nuclear medicine, echocardiography and specialized ultrasound are usually scheduled after the facility reviews a requisition. Call before travelling and follow the preparation instructions provided by the booking site.

Community diagnostic services

Bone mineral density

Canadian Diagnostic Network offers bone-density testing at selected Ottawa locations, including Barrhaven, Kanata, Nepean and Phenix. Confirm the closest available site.

MRI, CT and hospital imaging

MRI

MRI is normally booked after a referral is triaged. The booking facility will screen for implanted devices, metal, pregnancy and whether contrast is needed.

CT is generally performed through a hospital or designated imaging facility. The site will provide instructions about food, fluids, medication and contrast when relevant.

Preparing and obtaining records

Preparation matters

Some examinations require fasting, a full bladder, holding certain medications or bloodwork before contrast. Follow the instructions from the facility performing the test.

Images and reports

Imaging reports are sent to the ordering clinician. Contact the facility’s records department if you need copies of images for another provider.

Contact the ordering clinic if you have not received booking instructions within the expected timeframe, your symptoms are worsening, or you are unsure whether the correct facility received the requisition.
